We currently work alongside Bowland High School, and have done for the past 10+ years, to deliver a City & Guilds Level 2 Countryside and Environment course.
This course gives two year groups, of up to sixteen students each, the opportunity to gain an understanding of many aspects within the countryside and environment. It's a hands-on course where they learn and get chance to undertake a wide variety of tasks. Recently they have assisted in the planning and planting of some new hedgerows, as well as a small clough woodland.
Topics covered include animal health and welfare, animal husbandry, estate maintenance and boundaries, introduction to practical forestry and habitat maintenance.
The students love coming to the farm as it provides an alternative to learning in the classroom; gaining an insight into rural careers. Although the City & Guilds Level 2 is not currently governed as a GCSE equivalent, we have had many success stories through the course, with some past students successfully managing to secure jobs and apprenticeships such as wildlife rangers, landscape gardeners and others going on to further their education in Agriculture.
As well as the Level 2 Countryside and Environment course, we have also hosted educational visits and farm walks for Myerscough College and various Young Farmers Clubs.
